A top minister in Sri Lanka’s federal government of President Mahinda Rajapakse has reiterated that funds of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) were routed to financing several Tamil films including superstar Rajinikanth’s blockbuster Kuselan.
“I was not bluffing. My statement was based on the statements given by the leaders of the LTTE who are now in our custody after (the military) victory (over the separatists),” said Rishad Bathiudeen who stirred up a hornet nest in Tamil Nadu recently.
The minister claimed that money from the LTTE was being diverted to a London-based Tamilian to make films with Rajinikanth though the superstar may not be aware of that.
“I’m not suggesting that Rajinikant is directly involved in the deal and that could be the reason for his silence,” he told Gulf Times at his office here last night.
“You know the funds went through a partner. But these politicians engaged in pro-LTTE propaganda are direct beneficiaries though they are very small in number.”
The minister revealed that K Padmanathan alias KP, the LTTE’s international arms procurer and fundraiser who is believed to have funded the assassination of prime minister Rajiv Gandhi was the “main source of information” for Colombo.
Padmanathan slipped out of India five days after Gandhi assassination in Sriperumbudur in 1991 and was arrested in Thailand on August 7 after he “took over” the reins of LTTE from its slain leader Veluppillai Prabhakaran and was later brought to Sri Lanka to go through the country’s legal process.
The minister first spoke about the LTTE funding Tamil films and politicians in an interview last month.
He said Rajinikanth, Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhakam (MDMK) leader Vaiko and Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) leader S Ramadoss were beneficiaries. Bathiudeen, 37, the youngest cabinet minister in Sri Lanka who himself is a victim of LTTE’s “ethnic cleansing” in 1990 is identified as close to Rajapakse and plays a crucial role in the rehabilitation of hundreds of thousands of families who were rendered homeless during the civil war.
“These politicians (who were taking money from the LTTE) were always giving a wrong message to the people of Tamil Nadu. Tamilians are also victims of the LTTE atrocities. I was a student of engineering when my family had to move out of the northern province,” said Bathiudheen who has a strong bond with India as his grandfather Abdurrahman was a Malayalee migrant from Padanna village in Kerala’s Kasaragod district.
